Alpha Bet plays similar to 7-card draw poker where players make words with the letter cards -- 102 in the deck -- using provided plastic chips in two colors.
For each hand, players each place one chip in the center and get dealt a 7 card hand. Then everyone has 2 opportunities to discard 1 or more cards and get dealt replacement cards, to improve their hand. After that there is betting, players in turn start a bet with chips, meet the previous bet and possibly raise it, or fold, dropping out of the hand. The maximum bid is 5 chips. After the bidding is over, those still in the hand reveal their cards and announce the word(s) they are spelling. The best hand wins the pot of chips. Play until a certain time expires, or one player has all the chips.
Hands are primarily ranked by the length of the words made:
7 letter word
6 letter word
5 and 2 letter words
5 letter word
4 and 3 letter words
4 and 2 letter word
4 letter word
3 and 3 letter words
3, 2, and 2 letter words
3 and 2 letter words
3 letter word
2, 2, and 2 letter words
2 and 2 letter words
2 letter word
If players tie for the length of their words, then the points on the letter cards is added, and the higher total wins. If still tied, they split the pot.
